One of the warmest and driest starts to December in 30 years for Argentina
November 2022 was one of the driest Novembers in over 30 years for Argentina and Brazil. Dry conditions worsened the drought situation as some farmers opted to delay planting in hopes of wetter days ahead. Temperatures were variable across South America with the major growing regions across Brazil trending the coldest in over 30 years, according to WeatherTrends360. However, November 2022 was the 5th warmest November in over 30 years for the major production regions of Argentina.
November ended and December began with much of the same dryness in Argentina. The week-ending Dec. 3 was the 4th driest late November/early December period in more than 30 years for the major soybean growing regions of Argentina. To make matters worse, this was also the hottest late November/early December period in over 30 years for the region. Hot weather will have increased evapotranspiration for soils that were already desperate for moisture.
In Brazil, much of the major corn and soybean-growing regions were drier than normal to end November and begin December. However, eastern areas saw beneficial rainfall. It was hot and dry in Mato Grosso, where this was the 4th warmest and 3rd driest late November/early December period in 30+ years.
For the first full week of December 2022, week-ending Dec. 10, the situation doesn’t look much better for Argentina. Hot and dry weather continues and WeatherTrends360 expects this to be the hottest and one of the driest first weeks of December in over 30 years for Argentina’s major soybean-producing regions. However, there could be some showers that move through in the middle to latter half of the week, but appreciable rainfall is unlikely.
A large portion of central Brazil will receive beneficial rainfall and the major soybean-producing regions will trend the 5th wettest in more than 30 years for the first week of December 2022. Unfortunately, southern Brazil will miss out on the heavier rainfall with spotty showers expected.
