Developing a strategy to reduce soil compaction

When soil suffers compaction, myriad challenges arise. On the surface, appearances can be deceiving on the extend of the damage. But often, compaction leads to: reduced water infiltration and drainage, increased likelihood for erosion and sediment loss, and poor seedling emergence and yield. Andrew Phillips is an agronomist and Channel seed salesman who works with local farmers Dan, Clayton, and Adam Reynolds throughout the year on crop management practices.

Compaction can’t be corrected in just one season, but as Phillips and the Reynoldses show, awareness of the soil conditions and the decisions you make all year long can help you develop strategies to reduce your compaction risk.
