Virtual conference includes sessions for farm youth

The month-long virtual MI Ag Ideas to Grow With conference from Michigan State University Extension is underway and runs through the end of March.

While young people are welcome to attend any of the conference’s sessions, three programs are designed especially for youth. Deb Barrett, MSU Extension senior educator, says, “This is our second year offering youth focused sessions for individuals age 14 to 19. Teaching young people about job and career opportunities and fostering workforce readiness skills continue to be important to future success.”

A farm safety session will help attendees learn to recognize common hazards and prevent accidents on the farm. The record keeping class provides helpful information on keeping accurate records for business, personal finances, or FFA or 4-H projects. The Apprenticeship 101 session will share information about the career option of registered apprenticeships, and will explore occupations with high demand in the agriculture and natural resources field.

Youth sessions will all three be offered in the morning, afternoon, and evening, on March 14, 16, and 17, aligning with spring break in many school districts.

Other sessions held throughout the month will focus on agriculture, woodlot management, food safety, and home gardening. Topics include animal agriculture, farm business management, farm stress, precision technology, stored grain management, irrigation, growing fruit, manure management, and solar power.
