La Niña drives drought conditions in South America growing regions

Showers arrived late in the first full week of November, week-ending Nov. 12, but overall, the week was largely drier than normal for the growing regions of Argentina and Brazil. According to data from WeatherTrends360, this was the 4th driest and 4th coldest first full week of November in over 30 years for southern Brazil. Meanwhile, a little farther north, the week was warmer than normal with Mato Grosso trending the 3rd warmest in over 30 years, but still dry as it was the 2nd driest first full week of November in more than 30 years for the state.

The showers that arrived late last week will continue into the first part of this week, week-ending Nov. 19. However, by mid-week, drier trends will return across the growing regions of Argentina and Brazil. This is forecast to be the 6th driest second full week of November in over 30 years for the growing regions of Argentina and the 9th driest in over 30 years for southern Brazil, according to data from WeatherTrends360. Temperatures will trend warmer across southern Brazil compared to last week with above average trends continuing in Mato Grosso where this will be the 6th warmest second full week of November in more than 30 years.

The persisting dry conditions in Argentina and southern Brazil come as La Niña remains strong in the equatorial Pacific. La Niña is a large driver of the dry conditions seen recently in South America. With La Niña conditions expected to continue through the end of 2022, the issues that have been seen thus far in this planting and growing season are likely to continue. La Niña conditions are expected to begin fading in 2023.
